A five dollar bill has the same value to everyone. It can purchase $5 of any type of good.

But a $5 coupon only has the ability to purchase a specific type of good, that means its value differs depending on the person who holds it. To someone who has an affinity for the brand, the $5 coupon has value. But if you don’t care about the brand, that $5 coupon is worthless. Every day people prove the worthlessness of coupons from brands they don’t care about. My recycling bin is filled with them. You won’t find any $5 bills in there.

Conversely, I would argue that a $5 coupon from a brand you love has more value than a 5 dollar bill. In fact, it has so much value that people will willingly give up personal information just to get that coupon.

I saw one example of this when General Mills asked mothers who had shown affinity for Yoplait Kids Yogurt if they would send them their personal mailing address and in return they will send them a coupon for a free package of Yoplait Kids Yogurt. They served up 285,000 coupons to mothers who responded by giving extremely personal information – their home address. For more on this story, read the article (PDF) “14 Successful Techniques for Building Your Industry Voice with Social Media.” I don’t think General Mills would have had the same success if they asked mothers, “Would you give us your home address and in return we’ll send you a $5 bill?”

It’s with this understanding that I’m very interested in the beta launch of RNKD (pronounced “ranked”), by the founder of Zappos, Nick Swinmurn.

As Swinmurn explains, “RNKD rewards consumers for what’s in their closet.” That’s done with a combination of taking photos of clothes and then uploading them to the RNKD site and then tagging them.

The site’s purpose is to bridge the gap between the brand and consumers. Currently, brands sell to a store. The store sells to customers. With that one hop disconnect, brands don’t know who their customers are, explained Swinmurn. And that history of purchasing is a great predictor of future purchasing.

“Your history is more valuable than your wish list,” said Swinmurn, “I might want a Ferrari, but I’m never going to get one. But I have Levis in my closet. I’ll probably get another pair.”

Amazon targets advertising to its consumers with both past history and a wish list.

New business model – collect consumer data, get clients later

There don’t seem to be any clients on board yet for RNKD. As Dylan Tweney, Executive Editor of VentureBeat noted, “RNKD has a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem in that no brands are likely to be interested in the community until it has a critical mass of consumers, yet consumers have no real incentives to open their closets to the world without real benefits.”

Swinmurn isn’t concerned. He believes he’ll have no problem making a sale when he can prove, “Here are 10,000 consumers that say they want your stuff and they want to connect with you.” The question is will people offer up all this personal information (what’s in their closet) with the hope that they might one day get a $5 coupon? In the interim, Swinmurn is going to gamify RNKD by holding contests and giving out virtual badges for things like best collection and highest rated items.

This isn’t the only company that’s asked for you to identify your clothing or brands you love. China-based Holaba has an extremely similar model. This social network is collecting an enormous amount of data about brands people love (only in China currently) and then they’re going out to businesses and presenting them with this data.

It’s his model for building a business. Collect purchasing data of customers and brands, and then share that information with the brands in hopes of making a sale.

Could this be the new model for startups?

iPad competitors have come and gone: HP abandoned the TouchPad, the RIM Playbook was underwhelming and dozens of Android tablets have vanished.

With Microsoft set to unveil Windows 8 next week, pockets of the web are whispering that this cross-platform & touch-screen enabled OS has the potential to be the iPad killer.

I am skeptical, to say the least.

As of late, Microsoft has developed a reputation for stumbling late to the party. Remember Zune? And how about that Windows Phone? Vista?

You can’t blame me for not being optimistic about Windows 8…

That being said, deep down, I do sincerely want Windows 8 to succeed. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Microsoft continues to dominate PC market share and remains a force to be reckoned with in the console wars. They’ve got what the know-how to be innovative and the resources to be competitive – there’s no reason they can’t go toe-to-toe with Apple.

However, in the end, it will come down to execution.

What do you think? Will Windows 8 be DOA?

I just got back from the Future of Web Apps (FOWA) conference in Las Vegas where there was tons of great discussion and presentations on, you guessed it, the Future of Web Apps. But there was also a lot of great practical advice for start ups on how to get funding, network to get a meeting or a job, and how to brand your product. I took a lot of notes and conducted dozens of interviews. Here’s a quick summary of some of the best findings and advice I learned from the Future of Web Apps.

Create web-enabled desktop applications with Pokki: Just like KNCTR running on the itiBiti platform is a web-enabled desktop applications, Pokki is a development platform to create web-enabled desktop applications. The purpose of a Pokki-enabled app is to simplify app launching and get real estate on the desktop. Pokki launched at FOWA. Once the user installs Pokki’s engine, which takes about 30 seconds, it takes about five seconds to install each subsequent web app on the desktop.

Don’t try to predict the future, be agile in the marketplace: Tony Haile of Chartbeat, a web monitoring service, talked about how companies, such as Fast Company and Zara, are taking advantage of real-time information and a streamlined production process to react quickly to the market instead of trying to predict the mara. Zara, a clothing company has shortened the traditional concept-to-retail store process from 6 months to 15 days. Fast Company’s offices are filled with monitors tracking hot stories. When a story breaks, Fast Company rides the peak for greater traffic in the moment, and greater traffic for the future. According to Nick Denton of Gawker, you need to take advantage of peaks in traffic, because when you return to a plateau, you always plateau at a higher level.

Dumping the freemium model: The early days of the web commerce did not have the longevity of brick and mortar retail businesses. Web businesses had a combination of no track record and questionable security and stability. Many companies, in a desperate attempt to get users, gave their product away for free. But no business can sustain that, and the business model of “Oh, we’ll have advertising” is such a cop out. If you have a really good service that provides value, then you need to charge for it, eventually. Community platform developers NING has finally come to that realization and they currently have no free accounts. They’re closing in on having 100,000 paid subscribers with monthly subscriptions starting as low as $3.

Your community can help you develop if you give them space to innovate: Aza Raskin, co-founder of Massive Health gave a great presentation about prototyping. He explained that even at the earliest stages of a project you need to create something to demonstrate what stage you are with a concept. You can’t just tell people your idea and expect them to all buy in. You have to actually show something, no matter how rudimentary. For example, Raskin explained that the earliest prototype of the Palm Pilot was just a block of wood. The creator attached the block of wood to his hip and walked around for a week to see how it would feel to have a device attached to oneself.

Once you create something people can see and interact with, even if it’s far from your final product, you’re inviting people to participate in the product’s innovation. That participation creates a sense of ownership or buy in and a desire to see development continue to completion.

Authorize yourself through your browser: There have been many attempts to create a single authentication scheme across multiple services. The most famous, and I believe failed, is OpenID. Currently the most successful cross application authentication schemes are Twitter’s OAuth and Facebook’s Facebook Connect, where your community of friends in a sense validates who you are.

But these authorization schemes are still based on other services. Mozilla, the same people who give us the Firefox browser, are spearheading BrowserID, an authentication scheme based on just your email address. The advantages of BrowserID and similar authentication schemes is that developers don’t need to actually code authentication or sharing tools. It makes development easier and faster, and hopefully more secure for the user.

Authorizing sharing tools within the browser: Similar to Mozilla’s BrowserID browser-based identification, the open source developers also showed off how users can authorize within their browser what social sharing services they like to use. For example, say I like to share content via Flickr, Reddit, and Facebook. I just authorize those three services within my browser. The web developer then just passes through its content to those sharing services, no need to develop all those elements and authorize each one.

Discovering web apps: Currently, there’s no official way to discover web apps. Most web app developers rely on spreading their apps via social networks, getting some ink in blogs, and hoping for some word of mouth. Why are we going about it in such an indirect manner? Mozilla realized we’re already spending time on the web, so why not make discovery a part of the normal process of navigating the web?

Mozilla’s Todd Simpson showed off a demo of discovering and installing the NYTimes application. In the demo the user visits the NYTimes.com website. A pop-up appears in the corner of the screen asking, “Would you like to install the NYTimes web app?” When the user agrees, the app downloads and replaces the NYTimes.com experience with the NYTimes web app experience. Every time that person visits the .com site, it’ll be replaced with the web app.

Building a company on values: Starting a business is really hard. There are so many factors to deal with, not least of which is actually creating a product/service, selling it, and generating a profit. But Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, recommends determining what your personal values are and then your company values. If you do that at the beginning of the process, it makes building a business considerably easier. Hsieh admits that his previous company, Link Exchange, he never had any personal or company values. He changed that all when he started Zappos and as a result he’s built a corporate culture built on values.

What’s the ROI of giving a shit?: Wine Library TV’s Gary Vaynerchuk and author of “The Thank You Economy” asked this question. With all these “What’s the ROI of social media?” questions, it really boils down to caring about other people. When you care about other people, or “give a shit” as Vaynerchuk says, you get immense ROI. Vaynerchuk admits he’s been asked the question “What white wine goes with fish?” 100,000 times, and yet he keeps answering it every time. Before he even had a product he spent his time on Summize (now Twitter Search) simply responding to people interested in wine. For him, he’s definitely seen the ROI of “giving a shit.”

How many people have seen the movie Minority Report? It’s the one with Tom Cruise, where in the future, criminals are caught and arrested for crimes before they commit them.

How? Well, the police have a very strange collection of people on-staff called pre-cogs who can see into the future, see you committing a crime, and you’re simply arrested before you do. Scary. But also part of this futuristic world are advertisements in the bricks & mortar environment that know who you are and address your needs directly as you walk by.

It’s amazing how many people bring up these ad scenes from the movie in conversations, articles, conferences – and there’s lots of different opinions on how creepy that would be in real life.

But isn’t it already happening? Maybe even beyond what’s shown in Minority Report. The key scene in reference, being when Tom Cruise walks by The GAP and is asked by a female hologram if he enjoyed the tank tops he bought last time he was in the store.

On the web right now, the personalization of advertising has already taken these strides, including the recent announcement by Facebook of it’s Instant Personalization platform. As the company says, “See your friends’ reviews first when you search for a movie to watch. Hear your favorite songs automatically when you visit a music site. Experience a Web tailored to you and your friends.” That…is about the same thing.

But back in the non-digital space, The Wall Street Journal did a piece today talking about Billboards and Posters that allow for interaction with a user through WiFi – see a poster for a new movie, and check out the trailer right now on your Smartphone for free. It wont be long until a unique identifier communicates who you are at that Billboard, and it interacts with you in an even more relevant way.

The question is would you want it to? On the surface, people are taken back with these concepts. But if it meant that the advertising that already surrounds your life in the real world could be more relevant to your personal tastes, would you not find it a lot more interesting, and enjoyable?

Personalization is moving from a purely digital environment with no physicality, to the tactile world – even if ultimately the customized component of the message is delivered to you on in a digital way, IE: through a Smartphone. What’s your opinion – are you ready for The GAP to not just be a retailer when you walk in, but also to be your friend?
