<p>It was announced today, <a href="http://selnd.com/qcySJG">http://selnd.com/qcySJG</a> &#8211; that Walmart, bought One Riot, those with the “Killer Social Targeting Engine” (their words not mine), to better be able to connect with customers.  They speak of the intersection of social, mobile and retail being and how this will help give consumers what they want at any time.  Coming off of the idea that Social Business is the future, this acquisition by the world’s largest retailer, makes for some really interesting thinking.  Big Brands buying out development and research shops…is this what the future of Social business looks like or is it just a case of not being focused on the core business?<br />

<p><em>Here&#8217;s some of my coverage from the <a href="http://futureofwebapps.com/las-vegas-2011/">Future of Web Apps</a> in Las Vegas. I was covering the event for <a href="http://dice.com/">Dice</a> and <a href="http://intertainmentmedia.com/">Intertainment Media</a>. </em></p>
<p>As much as you plan, as much data you collect and analyze, and as much as you predict, you never can be 100 percent correct. Heck, you’ll probably be correct just a small fraction of the time. As more variables are out of your control are part of your business and solution, the less you can predict the future.</p>
<p>Instead of trying to predict the future, why not have a business and production model that can respond in real time, asked Tony Haile at the Future of Web Apps conference in Las Vegas. Haile is the general manager of <a href="http://chartbeat.com/">Chartbeat</a>, a real-time web monitoring application.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t pour all your money and effort into trying to create better prediction models. Make the problem of an uncertain future not matter, Haile said quoting <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiichi_Ohno">Taiichi Ohno</a>, the father of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Production_System">Toyota Production System</a>.</p>
<p>You can make the future not matter by being able to react quickly in real time. It’s possible to do this now with the easy access and filtering of real-time data.</p>
<p>Haile used the example of the clothing industry that has a six month production cycle from concept to being available in retail stores. The whole industry is trying to predict what people will be wearing in the future. That’s a costly process (research and analytics), and risky (still have lots of misses which means it costs a lot more).</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-20065" title="zara_clothing" src="http://www.socialmedia.biz/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/zara_clothing.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="251" />Conversely, clothing manufacturer <a href="http://zara.com/">Zara</a> realized the way to conquer this problem is to simply stop predicting and rather have a faster production timeline. They reduced their process from the industry standard of six months to 15 days. So they no longer have to spend money on predictions nor do they have to take gambles. They simply just look at what people are wearing, and produce that.</p>
<p>Monitoring real-time data is a great idea, but you actually need to have a production plan in process to actually take advantage of it. Real time data isn’t worth a damn if you can’t respond in real time, said Hale.</p>
<p>Personally, I’ve seen way too many companies have this chain of command for any kinds of communications. For certain industries, like securities, there are rules and regulations that prevent quick responses without official reviews. If you’re in a non-review-required industry, not a self-imposed-review company, then you must have a real-time response plan in place. You do that by giving your staff the authority and responsibility for making decisions in real time for themselves.</p>
<p>Don’t predict. Simply have a better system to respond.</p>

<p>Ortsbo for social media is available in 2 online formats, the original Ortsbo platform that uses Microsoft Silverlight and a new Alpha for HTML.  Both platforms are available at www.ortsbo.com </p>

From our internal, ad hoc research, the average fan has in excess of 100 Facebook Friends, giving us a potential reach of over 11 Million people on Facebook, and growing as the Fan numbers increase.</p>

Ortsbo is accelerating its Twitter program providing followers with regular messaging and updates.  The updated launch began the first week of January 2011 and to date there are approximately 12,000 followers representing a week over week increase of approximately 500 followers.</p>

<p>Ortsbo (<a href="http://www.ortsbo.com">www.ortsbo.com</a>) enables real time conversational translation in over 50 languages and seamlessly integrates with 13 of today’s most popular social media platforms including Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, Google Talk, Tencent QQ, Yahoo! Messenger, iChat, AIM, ICQ, Gadu-Gadu, Lotus Sametime, LiveJournal, Nokia Ovi and others.  In addition to social media chat networks, Ortsbo also offers a multi-lingual translator for Twitter.  </p>
<p>Commercial applications for Ortsbo include private chat network applications and a translation plug-in module for email. Development plans for Ortsbo include platforms for mobile handsets, portable computing and console applications.  </p>
<p>Ortsbo has released its beta plug-in module, Ortsbo for Microsoft Outlook, which allows users to send and receive multi-lingual messages with instant translation via email.  We believe that this will enhance the global communications market allowing for richer dialogue between subscribers. Ortsbo for Outlook will be increasing beta distribution to a larger test audience and to those who have registered at the Ortsbo.com web site.  Qualified registrants will receive added incentives as Ortsbo for Microsoft Outlook begins commercialization.</p>

<p><b><u>Facebook:</b></u><br />
Ortsbo launched a Facebook Fan Page (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/Ortsbo">www.facebook.com/Ortsbo</a>) in late August 2010 and the Fan Page has reached approximately 50,000 Fans, with approximately 1,000 Fans joining us just this past week.  From our internal, ad hoc research, the average fan has in excess of 100 Facebook Friends, giving us a potential reach of over 5 Million people on Facebook, and growing as the Fan numbers increase.</p>
<p><b><u> Twitter:</b></u><br />
Ortsbo is accelerating its Twitter program providing followers with regular messaging and updates.  The updated launch began the first week of January 2011 and to date there are approximately 7,000 followers representing a week over week increase of approximately 600 followers.</p>
<p><b><u> Alexa Rankings:</b></u><br />
Founded in April 1996, Alexa (<a href="http://www.alexa.com">www.alexa.com</a>) has developed an installed base of millions of toolbars, one of the largest Web crawls and an infrastructure to process and serve massive amounts of data.  Alexa uses this data to rank millions of web sites and also reports usage data.</p>
<p>Since launching in late July 2010, Ortsbo.com has quickly moved up the Alexa rankings from in and around 12 Million to under 20,000 – ranking among the Top 100K web sites worldwide.</p>
